MANTEC Visits Federal Legislators

03/13/2009

In an effort to receive continued funding for Pennsylvania’s manufacturers MANTEC led a team to Washington DC to meet with their Federal legislators.  MANTEC was one of many organizations to represent the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), the resource for America’s small and mid-sized manufacturers.

John W. Lloyd, President and CEO of MANTEC led the team which consisted of Michael D. Lehman, President of Flinchbaugh Engineering, York; Chris Tarsa, President of C.L. Sturkey, Lebanon and Democratic Chairman of Lebanon County and Carol Morton Tebo, SPHR, Director of Operations for MANTEC, Inc.

The team met with Senators Arlen Specter and Robert P. Casey, Jr.  MANTEC presented 57 letters to each Senator from manufacturers in South Central Pennsylvania acknowledging the support and assistance they have received from MANTEC and the MEP program during the past 12 months.  Meetings were also conducted with Representatives Joseph R. Pitts of the 16th District; Tim Holden of the 17th District and Todd R. Platts of the 19th District.

The message taken to Washington was that this program is the most cost-effective way to deploy national manufacturing support strategies:

  • This is the only program that is dedicated to manufacturers, with a 20 year track record of success.
  • In the past year alone, MEP staff and partners worked with 31,961 manufacturers and delivered services that created or retained over 57,000 jobs, produced $10.5 billion in new and retained sales, and caused modernization investments exceeding $2.19 billion.
  • MEP performance returns $20 to every federal dollar invested into the program.
  • MEP has offices in all 50 states and Puerto Rico and the infrastructure to deploy resources rapidly with effective oversight and measurement.
  • The program is driving the Next Generation Manufacturing vision to advance competitiveness and help firms compete in a 21st century global economy.  This vision includes advancing performance in innovation, efficiency, sustainability, talent management, supply chain and global engagement.
  • Pennsylvania is very fortunate to have State and Federal Legislators who understand the importance manufacturing brings to our state and national economy and have pledged their support to these manufacturing initiatives.

In 2008, during their 20 years of existence, MANTEC and other Pennsylvania centers have engaged with over 8,200 manufacturers in over 26,000 projects.  The following highlights successes reported by Pennsylvania manufacturers in the past year:
• Average Impact (per Manufacturer)    $1,559,000
• Sales Increased/Retained    $907,301,427
• Cost Savings      $91,694,439
• Investments Made     $151,378,073
• Jobs Created/Retained     $6,114
• Overall Customer Satisfaction    4.64 (out of 5)
